DO #SOMETHINGSIGNIFICANT: HAPPY PERIOD
At Something Social, we believe what goes around comes around. We also believe in the golden rule (and something that’s arguably more important than the previous belief), treat others the way you want to be treated. So that’s why we started #SomethingSignificant. Every month, we’re going to share with you a new way to give back. Whether it’s volunteering at a local food drive, or spreading awareness about an issue close to your heart, your Something Social team is here to encourage you to do #SomethingSignificant.
THIS MONTH: HAPPY PERIOD
A message from Happy Period…
#HappyPeriod was founded by Chelsea VonChaz and her Mother, Cherryl Warner, on February 8, 2015. The idea behind the initiative came to Chelsea after witnessing a homeless woman crossing the street, wearing blood stained undergarments. After some research and talking to a representative of an organization that services the homeless, she learned that pads and tampons are rarely donated and not required to be included in any shelter’s operations budget. Using social media to spread awareness on the initiative, Chelsea and her friends put on the first #HappyPeriod gathering on February 8, 2015, passing out kits in the Skidrow area of Downtown Los Angeles. In its first year, the nonprofit became a movement, forming chapters across the U.S., including New York City, Atlanta, Miami, San Diego, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.
How to get involved:
You can mail in your menstrual products to us! They accept donations of pads, tampons, panty-liners, soap, wipes, and unused underwear. Opened packaging is okay! Send your donations to: 829 W. Palmdale Blvd., Suite 35, Palmdale, CA 93552. They also accept monetary donations here.
